Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of The Martian, a lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this “propulsive” (Entertainment Weekly), cinematic thriller full of suspense, humor, and fascinating science—in development as a major motion picture starring Ryan Gosling。

HUGO AWARD FINALIST • ONE OF THE YEAR’S BEST BOOKS: Bill Gates, GatesNotes, New York Public Library, Parade, Newsweek, Polygon, Shelf Awareness, She Reads, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal • “An epic story of redemption, discovery and cool speculative sci-fi。”—USA Today

“If you loved The Martian, you’ll go crazy for Weir’s latest。”—The Washington Post

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish。

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that。 He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it。

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time。 And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company。

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him。 Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species。

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone。

Or does he?

An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going。

Awesome! Bit technical at times (had to look up pair production, relativistic physics etc) but in no way affected my enjoyment。

Very impressive novel。 If I was more of a science guy I’d probably give it 5/5。 Dope story tho

I mean, he did get to go on an awesome space adventure and meet an alien who ended up being his best friend。 I also wanted more answers and more information。 I needed more from that alien world。 Plus, the last conversation with Rocky seemed off。 These aren't points against, just thoughts。 Overall, I thought this was a great book。 I highly recommend the audio if you're into that。 。。。more

One of my favorite reads this yearAmazing how Andy Weir manages to make such a complicated topic with science and intergalactic bacteria alien understandable and even fun!

Another very good book by Andy Weir! I almost gave up on it, because it is written in the same "voice" as The Martian (i。e。, a wise-cracking science nerd POV), but the subject matter - interstellar space travel, alien life forms, etc。, made this an enjoyable read。 I particularly liked the unconventional nature of alien life he imagines。 Another very good book by Andy Weir! Science fiction isn't my favorite genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 My husband and I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Ray Porter, who is an incredibly entertaining reader。 Jordan listened to it first and wanted to share it with me。 I wasn't fully interested at the beginning (because science fiction), but only a couple of minutes in I was completely invested in the story。 It's full of mystery, suspense, well-used flashbacks, tragedy, victory, snarky humor, and some good old warm fu Science fiction isn't my favorite genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 My husband and I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Ray Porter, who is an incredibly entertaining reader。 Jordan listened to it first and wanted to share it with me。 I wasn't fully interested at the beginning (because science fiction), but only a couple of minutes in I was completely invested in the story。 It's full of mystery, suspense, well-used flashbacks, tragedy, victory, snarky humor, and some good old warm fuzzies。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 I think I would have liked this even more if this hadn't been my holiday read, meaning I would have actually had more time to focus on what I'm reading。 That being said, this was so good! The way this starts immediately hooks you in and won't let go。 I liked the structure, slowly figuring out how the things got to the point they are。 There is obviously a lot going on, both in the present-time story and in the flashbacks, but never too much。 And it all sounds very plausible, like thing 4。5 stars。 I think I would have liked this even more if this hadn't been my holiday read, meaning I would have actually had more time to focus on what I'm reading。 That being said, this was so good! If you liked The Martian, you will definitively like this one。 It's written in the same style, with the same kind on humor and the same science and engineering dumbing down which we all appreciate。 I recommend going into it blind, without knowing anything about the book, to slowly discover what happens together with the main character, as he doesn't remember a thing when he wakes up。 It contains a dual timeline that will help with figuring up everything by the end, I really enjoyed it。 If you liked The Martian, you will definitively like this one。 It's written in the same style, with the same kind on humor and the same science and engineering dumbing down which we all appreciate。 I recommend going into it blind, without knowing anything about the book, to slowly discover what happens together with the main character, as he doesn't remember a thing when he wakes up。 It contains a dual timeline that will help with figuring up everything by the end, I really enjoyed it。 。。。more

12/10 One of the best books I’ve ever read。 Full-stop。 Very much in line with Weir’s Martian book, but more Nolan-esque in form。 Ray Porter does an AMAZING job narrating; and I highly recommend the audiobook to get the full effect of Rocky’s communication。 Loved the ending - loved it all。

I categorize this novel as G。When High School science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up, he can’t remember who he is or why he is aboard the spacecraft。 All he knows is that he has been asleep for a very long time and the other two crew members are dead。As time passes, his memory begins to slowly return though it is very fuzzy。 Slowly the Earth’s sun began to dim。 The mission is the culmination of a planet-wide project to send a spacecraft and crew millions of miles in a last-ditch attempt to save humanity。 The only hope is that the solution to the problem can be discovered at Tau Ceti。 As Grace progresses, he encounters several problems。 He is able to overcome them through his understanding of basic science。Grace is faced with more than one life-threatening situation that he must overcome。 He is shocked when his full memory finally returns, and he remembers his last few hours on Earth。 As he does his research, he finds assistance and friendship from a very unexpected source。 With the clock ticking on Earth’s survival, will he be able to find an answer in time to save humanity? And what will happen to him?I enjoyed the 13。5 hours I spent reading this 482-page science fiction novel。 I have been fortunate to have read all three of Mr。 Weir’s novels。 I have found them to be exceptional。 The others that I have read are Artemis and The Martian。 Grace uses a wide range of math and science to solve problems。 This would make this a great novel to use in a STEM project。 I like the chosen cover art。 I give this novel a rating of 5 out of 5。You can access more of my book reviews on my Blog ( https://johnpurvis。wordpress。com/blog/)。 。。。more

4-4。5 stars! I loved this book! It was humorous and while heavy on the science (I ended up skimming for dialogue towards the end) it was necessary to break down everything that was happening。 I could tell it was condensed as easily as possible to still make it enjoyable for the average reader without losing its accuracy。 A few of the reasons why I’m saying it’s more 4-4。5 were the obvious moments I could tell it was written by a white, American man。 The comments about needing less women on board 4-4。5 stars! It was especially disappointing when referring to the Sahara desert and the African corruption。 I’m sorry- are we going to pretend like the US wouldn’t be a Black hole of corruption if something like this were to happen (and frankly already is that way but with a better PR team than “Africa”)?! But those are my nitpicky complaints。 As a Nigerian American woman previously in stem, they were hard to overlook。 Regardless it was thoroughly enjoyable and I’d suggest it to anyone who likes sci-fi novels。 。。。more

Enjoyed this a lot。 Very well-written sci-fi / space adventure with a great mix of science, humour and interesting characters and situations。It has an amazing start as we wake up with Ryland Grace who doesn’t know where he is, who he is or what’s going on。 He uses a scientific approach to slowly work out what’s happening。 The way this slowly reveals itself through the science is excellently done。 Even though you mostly know the basic premise from the blurb, there are still some clever and thrill Enjoyed this a lot。 Very well-written sci-fi / space adventure with a great mix of science, humour and interesting characters and situations。It has an amazing start as we wake up with Ryland Grace who doesn’t know where he is, who he is or what’s going on。 He uses a scientific approach to slowly work out what’s happening。 The way this slowly reveals itself through the science is excellently done。 Even though you mostly know the basic premise from the blurb, there are still some clever and thrilling reveals in this section。 He’s on a save-the-world space mission as rogue particles called astrophage are taking energy out of the sun。 This is threatening to lower Earth’s temperature and cause another ice age。 We get a lot of flashbacks to how Earth’s scientists discover what’s going on, and how they come up with a plan to try and solve it。 Not sure how credible all the actual science is, but the writing’s so well done, it all sounds very believable。 There’s a nice build up of drama as the world has to come together to solve the astrophage problem。 This is basically the Hail Mary of the title, as they send the spaceship Grace now finds himself on to another galaxy / sun to look for a solution。 Other than the flashbacks to Earth, the story’s mainly focussed on Grace, as his 2 crewmates didn’t make it out of their space hibernation。 However, without giving too much away, we do meet a new character called Rocky halfway through, and the whole story takes a much more interesting and unexpected turn。 If it’s got any flaws, its maybe a little slow-paced in the middle and padded out with slightly too much science 。 And the ending, though a lot of fun, is slightly cheesy and far-fetched。 Though not so much it spoils the story。 But those are only minor gripes。 Everything else is very well done。 It does a great job of making the science interesting, but still having a very human and emotional story behind it。 Very good, worth a read, even if you’re not a big sci-fi fan。 。。。more

This book surprised me! Some early concerns with an amnesia plot device and some science babble but ultimately this was delightful, surprising, and very worth reading

Hail Mary, full of Grace。 Lol。 The science talk and discovery was highly improbable- but it was fun to imagine a world in which our first scientific assumptions come true。 Then, the story progressed in an enjoyable manner and I enjoyed it and it was fun to read。 I’m happy read other books by this guy。

The plot idea is fairly interesting and I won't give it away。 The story is good but not exciting with twists and turns but no great ideas。 The science is not exactly earthshaking, a couple of technologies or evolutionary developments are just magic。 I can't comment on the physics and astronomy but the chemistry was slightly off but the biochemistry was off the scale ridiculous- on par with the Doc Savage airship lifted by a gas which doesn't burn and is "lighter than hydrogen。" Or as a cetain c The plot idea is fairly interesting and I won't give it away。 The story is good but not exciting with twists and turns but no great ideas。 The science is not exactly earthshaking, a couple of technologies or evolutionary developments are just magic。 I can't comment on the physics and astronomy but the chemistry was slightly off but the biochemistry was off the scale ridiculous- on par with the Doc Savage airship lifted by a gas which doesn't burn and is "lighter than hydrogen。" Or as a cetain comic once wrote, an inventor creates a replacement for gasoline made from air, water, and a third ingredient which is even cheaper (Al Capp。) Three astronauts from the U。S。 China and Russia, a launch from the Russian space center, work done on a Chinese aircraft carrier, contributions from scientists all over the world and in particular from Russia, Thailand (and Canada) but not Israel and Taiwan (I forget if there was someone from Japan, nothing earthshaking。) OK Pretty clear that the film audience includes China and Asia。 A bit unrealistic on the future of the world order。 The main character has some development during the story。 The backstory is slowly revealed- so not bad as a story。 Honestly there are way more original things to read, I would read this on a train or plane。 。。。more

This was probably the fastest I’ve read a book since I read Andy Weir’s ‘The Martian’ back in 2015。The first third of the book seemed to be introducing crazy new sci-fi concepts constantly, which I loved。 As things went on, the main story beats became somewhat predictable。 Still, it was a great ride the whole way through。I think this would make a great film。

4。5 My only goal going into ‘Project Hail Mary’ was to enjoy it more than ‘Artemis。’I am happy to report (*jazz hands*) that it was ”good good!” as Rocky would say, and that I am ”happy happy!”It made me cry。 This one will stick with me for some time so…”amaze!” Amaze amaze。 ☺️

。。more
